    History of Rajaji National Park

    Rajaji National Park, located near the Shivalik mountain range of the Himalayas, is a major national park in India spread over 820 square kilometres, rich in wildlife and botanical wealth.  Rajaji National Park is spread over forest areas of three major districts of Uttarakhand, Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal and Haridwar.

    Rajaji National Park was established in 1983 by merging the three Van Vihar of India, Motichur Van Vihar (1936), Rajaji Van Vihar (1948) and Chilla Van Vihar (1977).  On 15 April 2015, Rajaji National Park and Kudremukh National Park in Karnataka were recognized as Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger of India.

    Rajaji National Park is the second tiger reserve in Uttarakhand after Jim Corbett.  Rajaji Tiger Reserve is named after India’s great freedom fighter, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was the second and last Governor-General of India, and also received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1954.

    Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was the second citizen of the country to be awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’, and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was awarded India’s first ‘Bharat Ratna’.  Both these great personalities received this honour in 1954.

    Rajaji National Park, located in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, is a splendidly protected forest area spread over the plains of the Shivalik mountain range of the Himalayas.

    The holy Ganga River flows through the area of this National Park an area of about 24 km long, making this National Park extremely dense in vegetation and a natural habitat for wildlife.

    The large cedar trees in these national parks provide different beauty.  Apart from cedar trees, the vegetation found near the river in this national park, large grasslands, and deciduous forest areas make a natural habitat for the wildlife living here.

    Apart from this, trees like Rohini, Amaltas, Sheesham, Sal, Palash, Arjuna, Kachnar, Bamboo, Seemul, Chamor, Ber, Chilla, Bell, Amla etc. are found in the vegetation here.

    Wildlife of Rajaji Tiger Reserve

    Rajaji National Park was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger of India on 15 April 2015 and after that, it is the second tiger reserve of Rajaji National Park Uttarakhand.

    Rajaji Tiger Reserve has 34 tigers and 5 cubs as per the 2015-16 tiger census, besides tigers, the elephant is the major attraction of this tiger reserve.  At present, the number of elephants in this sanctuary is more than 500, if you have good luck then you can see a herd of elephants here.

    Apart from tigers and elephants, leopard is also the main predator of this tiger reserve, which has more than 200 leopards.  Visiting large herds of chital in this national park also provides a pleasant experience.  Rajaji National Park is a natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

    Asian elephant, tiger, leopard, wild cat, striped hyena, Indian hair, lazy bear, Himalayan black bear, king cobra, jackal, fox, goral, barking deer, sambar,  Wildlife such as chital, wild boar, rhesus macaque, monkey, Indian langur, porcupine, monitor lizard, the dragon can be easily spotted.

    In the Rajaji National Park, which is full of mammals, in the same way, the dense forests here provide a favourable environment for birds.  More than 315 birds of native and foreign species are found in the national park.

    Vultures, woodpeckers, kingfishers, pheasants, pea fouls, barbets, etc. are found throughout the year among the birds predominantly found in Rajaji National Park.

    Species of birds found in the park include Crested Kingfisher, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Great Pied Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Spotted Forkitel, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Pied Kingfisher, Crimson Sunbird and Fire-Tail Sunbird birds are found prominently.

    Note: – Booking of jeeps and gipsies in the national park can be done at the main entrance of the park.  Booking depends on the availability of Gypsy and Jeep, try to get the Gypsy and Jeep booked in advance.  The admission fee can be waived if the students show the identity card of the educational institution.  Changes can be made at Rajaji National Park at any time by the administration of the park.

    Note: – Rajaji National Park is open for tourists from 15 November to 15 June.  The park remains closed to tourists during the rest of the year due to excess rainfall.  The total time of safari in the national park is 3 hours.  Elephant rides are not done in Rajaji National Park.  Depending on the season, the National Park can be altered at the time of safari.

    Being located in the plains of the Shivalik mountain range of the Himalayas, there is a lot of rain in Rajaji National Park, so it is best to visit Rajaji National Park after the rainy season from November to the end of June.

    The nearest airport to Rajaji National Park is the Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun. The connectivity of Jolly Grant Airport to the major cities of the country is also very good.

    If you are travelling to Rajaji National Park from another country, then Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi is the nearest airport to Rajaji National Park.

    From Delhi, you will first get a good facility of rail, bus and cab to Haridwar, from Haridwar, you can easily reach Rajaji National Park by cab or auto.

    How to reach Rajaji National Park By Rail

    The nearest railway station to Rajaji National Park is Haridwar and the railway station of Dehradun. The distance from Haridwar to Rajaji National Park is 23 kilometres and from Dehradun to Rajaji National Park is 60 kilometres. From both places, you will get a cab or auto easily.

    How to reach Rajaji National Park By Road

    To come to Rajaji National Park, you have to first come to Haridwar. From Haridwar, you will easily get a cab or auto to Rajaji National Park. From any corner of India, you can reach Haridwar by road very easily. Haridwar’s connectivity to major cities of North India is very good.

    Regular private bus services and government buses are available to reach Haridwar from cities like Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. You can reach Rajaji National Park very easily by your vehicle or even by cab.

    Tourist places near Rajaji National Park

    Very large places like Haridwar, Dhanaulti, New Tehri, Tehri Lake, Narendra Nagar, Nag Tibba, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Malsi Deer Park, Chamba, Dasavatar Temple, Mussoorie, Joranda Falls, Barehipani, New Tehri Township, Matatila Dam and Deogarh Fort The list is there. Tourists can also enjoy many adventure sports such as river crossing, rock climbing, hiking and trekking at Camp Thangdhar. This camp provides other facilities to the tourists besides staying.
