Govind dev Ji Temple Jaipur
The Deity installed in the world-famous Govind dev temple located in Jaipur is considered to be a tangible form of Lord Shri Krishna. The original temple of Govind dev Ji was built in Vrindavan in 1590 (AD 1647).
The responsibility of building the temple of Govind dev Ji built in Vrindavan was given to Shri Roop Goswami Ji and Sanatan Guru Shri Kalyanadas Ji, and the entire cost of construction of the temple was borne by Raja Shri Bhagwan Das Ji, son of Sawai Mansingh I, King of Amer. The temple of Govind dev Ji located in Jaipur was built by King Sawai Jai Singh II.
It was commissioned in 1715. This temple of Govind dev Ji dedicated to Lord Krishna is the only unaided shrine in Jaipur. The temple of Govind dev Ji is located in the central courtyard of the garden of Jayanivas built in the east direction of the Chandra Mahal located in the City Palace.
The journey to consecrate the deity of Lord Krishna installed in the temple of Govind dev from Vrindavan to Jaipur was possible after a long struggle.
Govind dev Ji Temple History – Lord Krishna
Govind dev Ji is the adorable lord of Jaipur royal family, the Deity installed in the temple is considered as the embodiment of Lord Shri Krishna. According to the mythological stories and history, the deity of Govind dev Ji installed in the temple gives the beautiful black colored face and eyes of Lord Krishna.
According to historians, the deity of Govind dev Ji was built by Brajnabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. Before the Deity of Govind dev Ji, Brajnabha made two more Deities of Lord Krishna, one of which was named Shri Madan Mohan and the other Deity was named Gopinath Ji, thus Brajnabha made a total of three Deities of Lord Krishna.
Presently, the three Deities of Lord Krishna are established in Rajasthan. The Deity of Govind Dev Ji and Gopinath Ji is established in Jaipur and the Deity of Shri Madan Mohan Ji is established in Karauli, some distance from Jaipur. These three Deities of Lord Shri Krishna are equally revered and all the three Deities are considered as the visible form of Lord Shri Krishna.
History of the three Deities – Lord Krishna Story
According to mythology and some historians, sometime after the war of Mahabharata, Maharaja Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, declared Brajnabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, the king of Mathura. After becoming the king of Mathura, Brajnabh started renovating all the religious places associated with Lord Krishna.
Brajnabha had a very strong faith in his grandfather, Lord Krishna, in a way that Lord Krishna was the first to be revered for Brajnabha. Due to this faith and devotion, Brajnabh resolved to make a right deity of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna was seen by the grandmother of Brajnabha, so according to the descriptions of Lord Krishna, by his grandmother, he started to build the Deity of Lord Krishna with the best craftsmen of that time.
After the Vigraha was completely created, Brajnabha showed the Vigraha to Grandmother, seeing that the grandmother of Brajnabha said that the feet of the Vigraha matched Sri Krishna but the craft of the rest of the body did not match with Lord Krishna. After this, Brajnabh named the first Deity of Lord Krishna as Madan Mohan. The Deity of Madan Mohan Ji is presently established in Karauli district of Rajasthan.
Soon after the first Deity, Brajnabha constructed the second Deity of Lord Krishna, about which the grandmother of Brajnabh said that the chest and sides of this Deity match with Lord Shri Krishna, the rest of the body does not match with Lord Krishna. Brajnabha named the second Deity of Lord Krishna, Gopinath. The Deity of Gopinathji is enshrined in a grand temple in the old settlement of Jaipur.
According to the mention of Lord Krishna, made by Dadi Ji, Brajnabha built and got the third Deity of Lord Krishna. Seeing the third Deity of Lord Krishna, the grandmother of Brajnabh became enamored. He told Brajnabh that the face of this Deity is in perfect harmony with Lord Krishna. Brajnabha was very happy to hear this. And thus Lord Krishna’s third and final Deity came to be known as Govind Dev Ji.
After that, Brajnabha got all the three Deities of Lord Krishna together in a huge and magnificent temple with full law and order. Presently, the three Deities of Lord Krishna are revered in Rajasthan. The Deity of Govind Dev Ji and Gopinath Ji is revered in Jaipur and the Deity of Madan Mohan Ji is revered in Karauli.
It is believed that if any person sees Lord Krishna in one day, then he is blessed by Lord Krishna. Due to the manifestation of Lord Krishna, the three Deities, lakhs of devotees come to visit the three temples throughout the year.
Govind Dev Ji Temple Jaipur History
It is very important to know about how this Deity was built before Govind Dev Ji’s Deity was established in Jaipur. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to give you a brief description of the creation of the three Deities of Lord Krishna, the Deities of Shri Madan Mohan Ji, Shri Gopinathji and Shri Govind Dev Ji. The history of the creation of these three Deities of Lord Krishna is as inspiring and interesting.
Equally inspiring and struggling is the history of revealing the Deity of Govind Dev Ji to Jaipur. According to historians and mythology, Shri Madan Mohan Ji, Shri Gopinathji and Shri Govind Dev Ji, these three Deities of Lord Krishna were built 5000 years ago by Shri Krishna’s great-grandson Brajnabh. Soon after the end of the reign of Brajnabha, the rulers of the Yaksha caste over Mathura and its other provinces.
Yaksha caste rulers start harassing the general public of Mathura and destroy buildings of religious importance in Mathura. In order to save the three Deities of Lord Krishna from the atrocities and vandalism carried out by the Yakshas, the temple priests hide the three Deities in the ground. After some time, the three deities of Lord Krishna are taken out of the land by the Gupta ruler Nriapati Param and again restored to a grand temple.
By the tenth century, the attacks of foreign and Mughal invaders started increasing in India, in which the name of Mahmud Ghaznavi is written most. To avoid these external attacks, the three Deities of Lord Krishna are again hidden in the ground.
The Mughal invaders ruled in India for a long time, due to which the three Deities of Lord Krishna were forgotten by all the priests and devotees of Mathura. After a long gap of 600 years, in the 16th century, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the supreme devotee of Lord Shri Krishna, entrusted his two disciples Roop Goswami Ji and Sanatana Goswami ji with the responsibility of discovering the Leela places of Lord Sri Krishna in the surrounding areas of Mathura and Vrindavan.
Roop Goswami Ji and Sanatan Goswami Ji found the Leela places of Lord Krishna for some time and gathered information about all those places. It is believed that once Lord Shri Govind Dev Ji appeared to Roop Goswami in a dream and instructed to find his Deity at Goma mound near Vrindavan.
According to the instructions given by Shri Govind Dev Ji, Roop Goswami ji re-established the Deity of Lord Shri Govind Dev ji in a simple hut by searching the Deity of God who had buried the land for many centuries. When the Maharaja of Jaipur Sawai Mansingh came to know about the life and dignity of the Deity of Shri Govind Dev Ji, he came to Vrindavan and worshiped the Deity of Shri Govind Dev Ji and in 1590, a seven-story huge temple dedicated to Shri Govind Dev Ji Get it constructed.
The then Mughal ruler Akbar arranged for the red stone used for the construction of Shri Govind Dev Ji and donated the land around the temple to the cowshed. According to historians, there is a single example of cooperation by a Mughal ruler in the construction of such a large Hindu temple.
After some time the Deity of Radharani was brought from Orissa and distinguished with Shri Govind Dev ji. After Akbar, the Mughal invader Aurangzeb came to power in India. Aurangzeb gave orders to dismantle all Hindu shrines in India with immediate effect and completely shut down all facilities provided to the temples.
The Hindu religious places of Mathura and Vrindavan were also not untouched by these dictatorial orders of Aurangzeb. At that time, Shivaram Goswami Ji and other devotees of Shri Govind Dev Ji temple hid the Deity of Govind Dev Ji and Radharani once again by taking them back into the forest. After some time, Ramsingh, son of the then Maharaja of Amer Sawai Jai Singh I, brought the Deity of Lord Shri Govind Dev Ji under his patronage to the Kaman of Bharatpur.
After some time Sawai Maharaja Jai Singh II brought the Deity of Shri Govind Dev Ji from Bharatpur to Amer Valley and consecrated the Deity of Shri Govind Dev Ji. The place where Sawai Raja Jai Singh II revered the deity of Shri Govind Dev Ji is today known as Kanaka Vrindavan. The ancient temple of Shri Govind Dev Ji of Jaipur is still situated in Kanak Vrindavan.
According to a legend, Lord Sri Govind Dev Ji appeared in the dream to the founder of Jaipur, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, and instructed that his Deity should be transferred from Kanak Vrindavan to be seated near Chandramahal in Jaipur. After that Sawai Raja Jai Singh gets Shri Govind Dev Ji’s temple built in the shrine of Jayanivas, located near Chandramahal with immediate effect.
The construction work of Shri Govind Dev’s temple was completed in 1735. This temple has been constructed in such a way that one can have direct darshan of Lord Shri Govind Dev Ji from the Maharaja’s bedroom located in Chandra mahal. A small statue of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Gaur-Govind has also been installed near Lord Shri Govind Devji in the temple.
Two Sakhi has also been erected on both sides of the idols of Radharani and Govind Dev Ji. The name of the statue standing near Radharani is Visakha Sakhi Sawai Raja Jai Singh built this statue to serve Radharani. The second Sakhi, named Lalit Sakhi was built by Sawai Pratap Singh.
A servant named Lalitha used to do Pan Seva in a very devotional service, pleased by this, Sawai Pratap Singh installed the statue of Lalitha Sakhi near the Deity of Govind Dev Ji.
