History of Udaipur

Udaipur, the city of lakes, is also known as Venice of the East. Before the establishment of this beautiful city, there are some residues associated with the 5000-year-old Ayad civilization. This shows that even before the establishment of the original city of Udaipur, there used to be a fully developed ancient city here.

Udaipur, situated on the banks of the River Ayad, was founded in 1559 by Maharana Pratap’s father Maharana Uday Singh II. However, some historians also believe that Udaipur was founded on 15 April 1553 in Akhtij. The oldest Motimahal in Udaipur, which has been transformed into a ruin, also confirms this.

Some historians believe that the first palace that Maharana Uday Singh built in Udaipur is called Motimahal (at present the responsibility of looking after Motimahal rests with the Motimagapari Trust). Many different stories related to the construction of Udaipur by Maharana Uday Singh are very popular here.

Maharana Uday Singh used to govern Mewar from Chittorgarh before Udaipur. But to avoid the constant invasions of the Mughals on Chittorgarh, this place, surrounded by the Aravalli ranges, today called Udaipur, was chosen as the new capital of Mewar.

According to a legend associated with the construction of Moti mahal, once Maharana Uday Singh came to Kailashpuri after the birth of his grandson Amar Singh to visit the God of Mewar, Eklingji, the deity and ruler. He then found the area around the river Ayad as the new capital of Mewar and protected from Mughal invasions.

After that Maharana Uday Singh first built Motimahal for the new city settled at this place.
