Hampta Pass Trek, which is located just 18 km away from Manali, is one of the most famous trekking destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The Hampta Pass is a pass connecting the Kullu Valley and the Lahaul Valley of the Himalayas. On one side of this pass are the high altitude alpine meadows of the Kullu valley and on the other side is the rocky barren desert of Lahaul valley.

Situated at an altitude of 4270 meters (14039 ft) above sea level, this pass is named after Hamta village located below the village of Sethan, located near Manali. The shepherds of Lahaul Valley and Kullu Valley use the grasslands of the highest elevation located on the Hampta Pass for grazing their animals during the summer season.

Presently, Hampta Pass is the most famous trekking destination in Himachal Pradesh where you pass through waterfalls, rivers, glaciers, open alpine meadows, pinewoods, small lakes and rhododendron forest during this entire trek. Located near Manali in Himachal Pradesh, the Hampta Pass Trek is one such corridor connecting the Kullu Valley of the Himalayas and the Lahaul Valley, which presents you with a very different natural landscape. And from Hampta pass you reach Manali via Chataru. By the way, if you want, you can also come back to Jobra from Hampta Pass, it completely depends on you or on the tracking agency with whom you are doing this trek. During the total trek of 04 to 05 days, you pass through dense forests of waterfalls, rivers, glaciers, open alpine meadows, pinewoods, small lakes, walnut, oak, deodar and rhododendron.

Apart from this, when we summit Hampta Pass and move towards Chataru, the natural landscape of this place changes completely. Now you have to cross the rocky barren part of the Lahaul valley and the rough terrains to reach Chataru which gives you a completely different experience.

Here I would like to tell you that Chataru is also known as the confluence of Hampta Pass, Rohtang Pass and Spiti Valley. Apart from this, many trekking agencies also take you from Chhatru to Chandratal Lake in the Hampta Pass trek package and then bring you back to Manali via Chhatru.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 1 – Manali to Jobra (Distance 18 Kms) – Duration (02 hrs) By Road

The base camp of the Hampta Pass trek located in Himachal Pradesh is Manali and almost all trekking agencies start this trek from Manali. On the first day of the trek, you have to reach Jobra from Manali via Sethan village which is considered as Hampta Pass starting point.

After reaching Jobra, you and your fellow trekkers are given information about this trek, and how you have to complete this entire trek. After this, you can trek for about 01 hours to reach Jobra Campsite where you have to take a rest for the night. Apart from this, if you want, you can also go to Chika and there you can prepare your camp near the place named Rani Ka Nala.

But it would be more correct to complete this trek according to the trek plan of any trekking agency with whom you are doing this trek. Or if you are doing this trek with a trekking guide, then complete this trek according to them.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 2 – Jobra to Jawara (Distance 05 Kms) – Duration (05 hrs) by Trek – Altitude 9,380 ft to 11,200 ft

On the second day of the Hampta Pass trek, you have to reach Jawara from Jobra via Rani ka Nala. The distance from Jobra to Jawara is only 05 km, which will take you about 05 hours to complete. On the second day of the Hampta Pass trek, Jawara is your second campsite where you spend the night and accustom your body to the higher altitudes.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 3 – Jawara to Balu ka Ghera (Distance 05 Kms) – Duration (05 hrs) by Trek – Altitude 11,200 feet to 12,410 feet

On the third day of the Hampta Pass trek, you have to take breakfast early in the morning and reach the Balu ka Ghera from Jawara. From the Balu ka Ghera, you will start seeing the huge mountains of the Himalayas covered in snow from close range. On the third day of the trek, your campsite is set up in a Balu ka Ghera by the trekking agency.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 4 – By Sandhu Ghera to Hampta Pass and Siyagoru (Duration 05 Kms) – Duration (09 hrs) Trek – Altitude 12,410 ft to 14,039 ft | 14,039 feet to 12,865 feet

The fourth day of the Hampta Pass trek is the most important and also the most tiring day of this trek. On this day, after breakfast early in the morning, you start the trek from Balu Ghera to Hampta Pass. After reaching Hampta Pass, when you have completed your trek, then you also have to reach Siyagoru on the day, which is a meadow situated on the slope toward Lahaul Valley.

As you start the trek from Hampta Pass towards Siyagoru, the natural landscape changes completely. Where you start this trek with lush green forests, there are rocky, barren and vegetation fewer mountains in front of you.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 5 – Siyagoru to Chhatru (Distance 06 Kms) – Duration (05 hrs) by Trek. Altitude 12,865 feet to 10,900 feet

You can also consider the fifth day of the Hampta Pass trek as the last day of this trek. On this day you reach Chhatru by trekking from Siyagoru. It may take a total of 05 to 06 hours for traveling from Siyagoru to Chhatru. After reaching Chhatru, you can also visit the nearby Chandratal Lake, which is also compared to Pangong Lake. After seeing Chandratal Lake, you can return to Chhatru and take a night’s rest at your campsite.

Hampta Pass Trek – Day 6 – Chhatru to Manali (Distance 61 Kms) – Duration (02 hrs) By Road

The sixth day of the Hampta Pass trek is officially considered the last day. Because on this day you reach Manali back by taxi from Chhatru.

Now when we talk about the best time to trek Hampta Pass, I would like to tell you here that the Hampta Pass trek can be done only for 06 months in a year. Due to the high altitude area, it receives several feet of snowfall during the winter season, due to which trekking at this place is not considered safe at all.

Rest you can trek to Hampta Pass from the second week of May to the second week of October, but the best time to do this trek is from the first week of June to the last week of September. You can get a lot of snow near Hampta Pass in May so you may have to return without summiting Hampta Pass at this time of year.

But when you do this trek in June, you can get to see snow only in front of the sand circle. Apart from this, different species of flowers can be seen in the trails and grasslands of the trek here during the monsoon season. Although you can do this trek in October most of the trekking agencies do this trek only till the last week of September month.

This simply means that if you want to do this trek in October, then you can do this trek with the help of a guide. But at this time of the year, there has been a lot of heavy snowfall here, so there is a possibility that you may not be able to complete this trek at this time of the year.

How to reach Hampta Pass by Air

To reach Hampta Pass, you must first come to Manali. And the nearest airport to Manali is Chandigarh International Airport. The distance from Chandigarh to Manali is only 300 km. You will get regular air service to Chandigarh from all the major airports in the country.

From Chandigarh, you can easily reach Manali with the help of taxis and buses. And then you can start your journey from Manali to Hampta Pass.
