Madhyameshwar is located in the village of Goundar in Uttarakhand. The height of Madhyameshwar is 3497 meters (11473) feet above sea level. Being situated at a very high altitude, it receives many feet of snow during the winter season. Therefore, the darshan of Madhyameshwar temple is closed for 06 months during the winter season.

In the winter season, the palanquin of Madhyameshwar temple is taken to the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath and Madhyameshwar is worshipped in this temple during the entire winter. Lord Shiva’s belly (navel) is worshipped in the Madhyameshwar temple.

It is believed that the Madhyamaheshwar temple, like the rest of the Kedar temples, has been built by the Pandavas. Madhyamaheshwar is considered a huge religious place of Lord Shiva, so many devotees of Lord Shiva come to visit Madhyameshwar every year.

Madhyameshwar also attracts many trekkers who love adventure due to its scenic beauty and the arduous trek leading to the temple.

Madhyameshwar temple is worshipped as the second Kedar in Panch Kedar temples. The story of the construction of this temple is also associated with the Mahabharata period, it is believed that along with the rest of the Panch Kedar temples, this temple was also built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata period.

Due to this, the history of the construction of the Madhyameshwar temple is also associated with the rest of the Panch Kedar temples. According to the mythology associated with the time of Mahabharata, after the end of the war of Mahabharata, the sin of fratricide was inflicted on all the Pandavas.

Because of this Lord Shiva became very angry with all the Pandava brothers. To get rid of the sin of fratricide, the Pandava guru Rishi Vyas suggested that if all the Pandava brothers somehow get the blessings of Lord Shiva by pleasing him, then they can get freedom from the sin of fratricide.

As suggested by sage Vyasa, all the Pandavas left to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva was so angry with the Pandavas that he hid in Kashi (present-day Benares) to avoid them. But the Pandavas recognized him in Kashi. Being identified by the Pandavas, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and descended into the Kedar mountain range of the Himalayas.

But the Pandavas reached here while chasing them. When Lord Shiva came to know that the Pandavas had reached here in search of him, he disappeared from here. This time Lord Shiva divided his body into five different parts to escape the Pandavas and reappeared in five different parts of the Himalayas.

Lord Shiva’s back appeared in Kedarnath. His belly (navel) was revealed in Madhyamaheshwar. His arms appeared in Tungnath, his face appeared in Rudranath, and his innards appeared in Kalpeshwar at the end.

(Thus, all the five places where Lord Shiva appeared are worshipped as Panch Kedar today.) But the Pandavas were also very stubborn, the five Pandava brothers went to all the places where Lord Shiva was different- Appeared in different form and went there to do austerities and built a temple to please Lord Shiva.

Finally, pleased with the devotion of the Pandavas, Lord Shiva blessed the five Pandavas and freed them from the sin of fraternity. It is believed that the Panch Kedar temple of Lord Shiva came into existence due to this historical event that happened in the Mahabharata period.

When you travel on foot to Kedarnath, you get a lot of facilities while travelling on foot – like all types of basic facilities like medical, restroom, restaurants, emergency services and toilets etc. Local administration is available to you during the whole Kedarnath walk.

And the reason for this is that Kedarnath is a part of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand and besides this ancient temple is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. But the rest of the four Panchkadar temples are not as easy as their journey to Kedarnath, except for Kalpeshwar.

Kalpeshwar’s walking trek is currently just 02 kilometres. The difficulty of hiking to Madhyameshwar is considered to be a middle-class track. Before starting the track of Madhyameshwar you have to reach Ransi village in Uttarakhand. Ransi is the last village in your Madhyameshwar yatra as far as the car can go or you can say that the road remains.

The trek from Ransi to Madhyameshwar is a total of 18 kilometres and it may take you 8-10 hours to complete it. During the entire trek, you find some villages in Uttarakhand from where you can buy goods of your convenience or some food items. It would be better that you keep the items you need with you.

One more thing to note is that you will not get so much facility for overnight stay around Madhyameshwar temple. There are only 2-3 restrooms near the temple. So it is good to keep camping related items together during the trek. After completing the trek to Madhyameshwar, you must visit the Budha Madhyameshwar temple situated on the top of a mountain, 02 km away from the temple, the next morning.

From the summit of this small temple, you get very spectacular views of the Himalaya Chaukhamba mountain range. Click here for complete details of the Madhyameshwar trek
